NFRN meets with charity over smoking concerns

Friday, 22 August 2008
The National Federation of Retail Newsagents' (NFRN) legal and parliamentary Scotland has met with charity Ash in a bid to highlight the concerns of retailers over cigarette gantries.

Both of the organisations said that they will look at alternative schemes referred to by member of the Scottish parliament for public health Shona Robson.

Various points were included as part of the meeting, such as the removal of gantries, the smuggling of fake tobacco and proxy purchasing.

Chair of legal and parliamentary at the NFRN Jim Maitland said that regulations ought to be introduced so that younger people do not begin smoking from an early age.

"It was a highly constructive meeting and both parties are committed to support well rounded, balanced, legislation that actually achieves the aims and objectives by reducing the risk of our young people starting the habit of smoking," he commented.

The Association of Convenience Stores recently said that the government should rethink plans that would see the visible display of cigarettes in stores made illegal.
